Accommodation Near Thorpeness; the strangest, gentlest village on the Suffolk coast.

Thorpeness is unlike anywhere else on the coast. Built as a private holiday village in the early twentieth century by a Scottish architect-developer, it kept the mock-Tudor frontages, the boating lake (the Meare), and the surreal House in the Clouds, a five-storey water tower disguised as a cottage on a tower. It is a quiet, almost dreamlike place to spend a few days.

Our nearest properties sit ten minutes inland in Leiston, with off-road parking and the space that Thorpeness itself can't always offer. From any of them you can be on Thorpeness beach or at the Meare in under fifteen minutes.

What to do at Thorpeness

The Meare is the centrepiece, a man-made boating lake with hand-painted signs from the Peter Pan stories and rowing boats by the hour. The House in the Clouds sits a short walk away and now operates as a holiday home; the windmill next to it is open in summer. The beach is one of the quietest stretches of the Suffolk coast, wide, shingle, with the silhouette of Sizewell B further north.

  • The Meare boating lake and Peter Pan islands
  • The House in the Clouds and Thorpeness Windmill
  • Quiet shingle beach with views toward Sizewell
  • The Dolphin Inn at the heart of the village
  • Aldeburgh five minutes south for evening dining

Walks from Thorpeness

The coast path north to Sizewell takes about an hour at a relaxed pace and is one of the best short coastal walks in Suffolk, beach, low cliffs, marshland and the curious sight of the power stations rising in the distance. South to Aldeburgh is shorter and runs along the seafront the whole way.

FAQs

Common questions.

Can I stay in Thorpeness itself?

There are private holiday lets in the village but stock is very limited. Our Leiston properties give you the same beach and Meare access ten minutes away with more space, parking and availability.

Is Thorpeness suitable for families?

Yes, particularly families with younger children. The Meare is shallow, the beach is gentle, and the village is car-light and walkable.

Is the House in the Clouds open to visit?

It operates as a private holiday rental run separately, so the building isn't open to general visitors, but you can walk right up to it and the windmill next door is open in summer.
